Irish Open Breaks New Ground as First Sydney Festival Gets Underway
- Irish Open held outside Dublin for the first time, in Sydney.
- 15-day festival features 40+ tournaments, including record-breaking A$1M Main Event.
- New formats debut alongside traditional Irish favorites, with A$2M in total guarantees.
After 46 years with Dublin at the centre of its identity, the Irish Open has officially taken its first step overseas.
Irish Open Sydney 2026 began on August 31 at Poker Palace inside Club Marconi, launching a 15-day festival that runs through September 14. More than 40 tournaments are scheduled, with close to A$2 million in guaranteed prize pools and a A$1 million guarantee attached to the A$2,000 Main Event.
What to Expect From the First International Irish Open
The festival includes more than 40 tournaments across 15 days, with buy-ins ranging from smaller side events to a A$10,000 Super High Roller. The schedule also carries several formats familiar from Dublin alongside tournaments more inspired by the Australian and Asia-Pacific field.
Among them is the A$600 Asia-Pacific Cup, making its Irish Open debut. Sydney will also host the A$360 Deaf Championship Main Event, a Ladies Championship, PLO events, 2-7 Triple Draw, Sviten Special and a Mixed 8 Game High Roller Championship.
The final weekend introduces another new tournament, the A$880 Sydney Poker Open, which comes with A$100,000 guaranteed.
Still, everything eventually points toward the Main Event.
The A$2,000 Irish Open Sydney Main Event begins on September 6 and comes with six starting flights, including two turbo flights. Its A$1 million guarantee is the largest of the festival, while 18 super satellites at Poker Palace are guaranteeing a combined 170 Main Event seats.
Remarkably, four players already have chips waiting for them on Day 2.
Sydney Action Starts With the Mini Irish Open
While it's too early for festival champions just yet, but cards are already in the air.
The A$360 Mini Irish Open opened the series on August 31 with Day 1A before Day 1B followed on September 1. The tournament continues through additional starting flights and comes with a sizeable A$500,000 guarantee.
September 2 brings the start of another major early event, the A$880 Lucky 8’s. Five starting flights feed into its September 6 final, with A$250,000 guaranteed.
Main Event satellites are also running throughout the opening days, each carrying guaranteed seats into the A$2,000 flagship.
