Hoping to break 2006 record

World Series of Poker organizers are going the extra mile to try and top the record for the $10,000 Main Event. The tournament fell 110 entries short of that accomplishment in 2022 and management is hoping the new “Main Event Maynia” qualifying weekend will help make that happen this summer.

The all-time record was set in 2006 with a field of 8,773 players that saw Jamie Gold take the title for $12 million. Main Event Maynia is now set for May 20-21 at casinos around the world. The Main Event then runs July 3-17 at the Horseshoe Las Vegas (formerly Bally’s) and Paris casinos.

“History is only a few months away and Main Event Maynia is a big part of making sure this is the biggest field in the history of the WSOP,” WSOP executive director Ty Stewart said in a news release. “The reigning champion Espen Jorstad earned his Main Event seat by winning a satellite event, so there’s plenty of reason to believe this year’s champion might just be a regional player who wouldn’t otherwise be heading to Vegas.

“Main Event Maynia is long overdue, and we thank our global network of satellite partners for giving players a chance to take their shot from their own backyard.”

Players looking to grab a seat will find plenty of opportunities at Caesars Entertainment live poker rooms and partner casinos on three different continents – North America, South America, and Europe.

The properties will host guaranteed seat satellite “step” tournaments with $140 buy-ins. This then culminates with a $1,175 mega satellite guaranteeing a Main Event seat and travel stipend.

Also this year, the WSOP is offering the “Main Event for Life” promotion. If the attendance record is broken, all entrants will be placed into a drawing awarding a non-transferable Main Event buy-in for the next 30 years.
