1. Understanding the Key Differences Between 4-Card and 5-Card PLO
The transition from 4-card to 5-card PLO introduces significant changes in strategy. In 4-card PLO, strong starting hands typically include high cards and pairs, along with strong run-down hands that have good playability across different boards.
In contrast, 5-card PLO requires players to reconsider their hand values. For example, a hand like A-A-7-3-2 may not be as strong if the cards are not suited, especially against connected hands.
Players should focus on connected cards and high pairs when constructing their ranges. Holding weak aces without suited connections can lead to unfavourable situations.
2. Prioritise Nut Draws and Avoid Second-Best Hands
In 5-card PLO, aiming for the nuts is essential due to the increased likelihood of encountering stronger hands. While it may seem appealing to have a queen-high flush or a small full house, these hands can lead to costly mistakes.
Players should strive for nut flushes or nut straights while avoiding small pairs that may result in set-over-set scenarios.
3. Adapting Your Strategy for Different Formats
Cash Games: In cash games, the rake can impact profitability significantly. Players are advised to play tighter and wait for premium hands to avoid losing money on marginal situations.
MTTs (Multi-Table Tournaments): In rebuy tournaments, adopting an aggressive approach can be beneficial. Building a large stack early can provide an advantage as the tournament progresses.

Understanding equity is crucial in PLO. For instance, a hand like K-Q-J-T-9 on a Q-9-5 flop presents a strong wrap against a top set.
