The World Poker Tour (WPT) stands as a defining institution in the landscape of professional poker, shaping the way tournaments are conducted and broadcast across the world.

The World Poker Tour was founded by attorney and television producer Steven Lipscomb, who envisioned a televised poker series with open card cameras to bring a new level of excitement and transparency to viewers. 

The inaugural season debuted in 2003, featuring events filmed in notable casinos across the United States, including the Bellagio and Commerce Casino.

The WPT's innovative presentation, combining high-stakes poker action with player interviews and strategic insights, drew a substantial audience on the Travel Channel. 

This exposure helped to elevate poker from a casino-exclusive game to a spectator sport with mass appeal.

Key Milestones

2003: The WPT aired its first season, showcasing tournaments with millions in prize money and introducing poker to mainstream television.

2004: The WPT Championship at Bellagio crowns its first champion, Alan Goehring, who wins over $1 million.

2009: The WPT is sold to PartyGaming for $12.3 million, marking a pivotal corporate transition aimed at expanding its global footprint.

2011: The introduction of the WPT National and Regional events opens the brand to a broader range of players with lower buy-ins.

2017: The WPT expands into Asia with events in China and Japan, indicating the brand's increasing international reach.

2022: The WPT celebrates its 20th anniversary with record-breaking events, including the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas featuring a $15 million guaranteed prize pool, one of the largest in poker history.

Tour Highlights

The World Poker Tour has hosted some of the most memorable tournaments and players in modern poker history. Legendary figures such as Gus Hansen, Daniel Negreanu, and Doyle Brunson have secured victories on the WPT stage. 

Notably, Carlos Mortensen remains the only player to win both the WPT Championship and the WSOP Main Event.

Among the tour’s iconic venues are the Bellagio in Las Vegas, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Florida, and Casino Barcelona in Spain. 

Each stop combines intense competition with high-value prize pools, often attracting elite professional players and aspiring amateurs alike.
