Live Poker Worldwide: Major live poker tours and events in April.

March was a busy month for live poker, with several WPT and WSOPC events running, plus EPTs, GUKPTs, EAPTs and much more. High roller players also had choices to make with PokerGoTour and Triton providing plenty of big buy-in events to choose from. There have also been further holes plugged in the scheduling gaps, with the LAPT finally revealing its schedule for 2024. GG Poker has also now launched its Road to Vegas WSOP satellite promotion, which is already outperforming itself and looks set to easily reach the and surpass the 1,000 package winner target that they have set themselves.

April looks to be not much different to March, in that it is another month with lots of great live poker options. There is something for every wallet, with grassroots, mid-stakes and high rolling action abounding. Spring is most definitely hear and live poker is blooming. We’ve selected the biggest, the best and some of the rest for our April live poker insight. Here’s our region-by-region guide to the highlights of the month and details on where to qualify online, for those events that offer that option.

Europe

April is not the busiest month for live poker in Europe, but it does include several high profile events, including a WPT Prime Championship in Bratislava, a WSOPC in Cannes and undoubtedly the most high profile of them all is EPT Monte Carlo. For those with smaller bankrolls, there are plenty of lower buy-in options throughout the continent, including three affordably priced festivals in Malta.

UK

While March’s live poker offering in the UK included a WSOP International Circuit festival at Nottingham’s Dusk Till Dawn, April’s action is purely domestic, with no touring juggernauts of the poker world resting their laurels in Blighty. The famously rubbish British weather in April doesn’t make it an easy sell for overseas players. Most of the month’s significant live poker events are at Grosvenor Casinos, with GUKPT Edinburgh being the highlight for most, with its £1,250 main event. Ludovic Geilich is the defending Edinburgh champion and if he gets a big stack early, who would bet against him making another deep run and continuing the fine form he showed in destroying the opposition at GUKPT Blackpool in March.

There is also a 25/50 weekend at Grosvenor casinos, with five such £250 buy-in events taking place simultaneously in the Rank Group owned chain’s venues in Coventry, Stockton-on-Tees, Portsmouth, Glasgow and Luton. At a slightly higher price point, the £560 UK Poker League by 888 Poker has its fourth event of the year, this time at the Grosvenor Casino in Manchester (Bury New Rd).

Ireland

The Irish Open takes place over the Easter Weekend and just creeps into April, as that is the final day of the main event. It’s the oldest poker tournament in Europe with a rich history and is sponsored by Paddy Power and PokerStars. Players will have to wait another year before the next edition, but in the meantime, the Irish Poker Tour has affordable poker festivals running all-year-round. This month’s offering on the premier live Irish poker series is the Connacht Festival in Galway, running from 11-14 April, with a €150 buy-in main event.

France & Monaco

The WSOPC festival in Cannes is the live poker highlight of the month for events taking place on French soil. It runs from April 12-22 with a €1,100 main event and a festival schedule that includes 12 ring events. However it might not be the highlight of the month for French players, as the long established EPT Monte Carlo festival starts soon after the conclusion of WSOPC Cannes. Featuring both the €1,100 France Poker Series (FPS) main event and the €5,300 EPT main event, it surpasses the prestige of even the World Series in this part of the world. For those who’s bankrolls put the Monte Carlo showpiece out of reach, there is also another Unibet Deepstack Open, this month in Pornic, close to Nantes, in the North-West of France.

Spain & Portugal

It’s a quiet month for live tournament poker in Spain, with just the CNP Barcelona running in April 2024. The festival runs from 8-14 of the month, with a €550 main event. Perhaps it is a month for Spanish players to focus on cash games. If you happen to be in Madrid and want to play, there are two very centrally located casinos with poker rooms, but beware, Madrid cash games play anti-clockwise.
While it might be a quiet month in Spain, in neighbouring Portugal there is more going on to keep live poker players satisfied. Casino de Troia hosts the low-stakes pan European Vamos Poker Tour from 9-14 April, featuring a €350 main event. While this will be the highlight for the majority of Portugal’s live poker players, there is also a very juicy offering taking place for the country’s high rollers and traveling players who can’t resist great poker mixed with Portugal’s fantastic climate and tasty cuisine. The European Poker Masters is a high-stakes series with a €2,500 buy-in main event running from 17-21 April at Casino Estoril, one of the largest casinos in Europe. Surprisingly this is the event with the second biggest main event buy-in of the month, after EPT Monte Carlo.

Czech Republic

Close to the German border, Rozvadov is a small village with a massive casino. Kings Casino is Europe’s largest poker venue with over 200 tables and plays host to some of the most prestigious tournament series on the planet, including the WSOPE. Last month the casino held a Eureka Poker Tour event and this month there are several low buy-in festivals taking place. The highlight in April is the Euro Poker Millions, a €490 buy-in mystery bounty format event with a very cool €1m guaranteed prize pool, which runs from 3-8 April.

Liechtenstein

One of the smallest and often overlooked countries in Europe is Liechtenstein, nestled on the border between Austria and Switzerland, with a population of just 39,000 residents. The country’s small size doesn’t prevent it from being one of the best poker locations in Europe, with a busy poker room at Grand Casino Liechtenstein, managed by the highly experienced Yalcin Dundar, who always puts on a great show. This month, running from 11-23 the casino is holding an event called the Wolf Millionaire, with a buy-in of 600 Swiss Francs and a 1m guarantee.

Malta

Malta is Europe’s hottest destination (literally) for big field, low buy-in poker events. Being the southernmost country in the EU it is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine per year and April is one of the best month’s to visit the tiny island state. The summer months of June, July, August and September are usually too hot to fully enjoy a holiday on Malta, with April-May and October-November being the best months, due to still having great weather (compared with the rest of Europe) but not being dangerously hot for unprepared holidaymakers from the north of Europe.

The country first rose to poker prominence with the Battle of Malta (BOM), which began in 2012 as a €550 main event with multiple starting days at Portomaso Casino. In 2018 owner and operator PokerListings decided to sell the event and the buyer was none other than Casino Malta, a newly opened rival to Portomaso. Angered at losing the jewel in their poker crown, Portomaso and the event’s manager Ivonne Monteleagre (who as a result of the sale, had lost her job as manager of the BOM) set up a new live poker brand, the Malta Poker Festival, to rival the event they had lost to Casino Malta.

This rivalry means that both operators run events at the same times of the year (April/May and October/November), usually running them back-to-back. This creates two poker heat-spots on the island, which lasts for 2-3 weeks and the first of these takes place this month, in April 2024.

First up is the Battle of Malta’s Spring Edition at Casino Malta, which includes a busy tournament schedule headed by a €600 buy-in main event, with a guarantee of €500,000.

While the rivalry between the two operators usually has an etiquette that sees the events run back-to-back, with only a day or two of overlap, this year an additional festival has been scheduled that directly clashes with the Battle of Malta. This is the EAPT Malta festival, which runs from 1-5 April, with a €560 main event. This short festival also includes a multi-day satellite event into the Mediterranean Poker Party in Cypus this May.

The Malta Poker Festival doesn’t run immediately after the BOM this year, there is a two week gap, with the third of the month’s festivals running from 22-29 April with a €550 buy-in main event.

Slovakia

Bratislava once again steps up to the plate to show its credentials as one of the most active poker hotspots in Europe. Last month (March) the various poker events in the Slovakian capital included the Norwegian Championship, while this month’s offering is headlined by the eye-catching €1,100 WPT Prime Championship, which runs from 5-15 April.

Players on WPT Global have a chance to win a WPT Prime passport in weekly qualifiers. If you are registering for the first time, use WPT Global promo code NEWBONUS to get the poker room's biggest available bonus.

The Americas

April is another busy month for live poker in the Americas, with three further WSOPC festivals plus two WPT Championships and of course the much anticipated WPT Voyage is already sailing when the month begins. South America is less busy when compared to its northern counterpart, however it is buoyed by the first LAPT festival of the year in Panama, while a further Kings Series of Poker event takes place in Fortazela, Brazil. Let’s take a closer look at what’s on and where.

Las Vegas

The WSOP is still a few months away, but it’s not far away in the heads of thousands of live poker players all over the world, who will now be planning their summer in Las Vegas. It’s also not far away for players on GG Poker, who have stormed the Road to Vegas satellite promotion right from the get go, with more than 1,000 online qualifiers from the world’s largest site looking very much on the cards.

But while the rest of the world waits patiently, Las Vegas itself never stops rolling and live poker is pretty much a permanent fixture in the Nevada desert city that never sleeps, but will eat you alive if you’re not careful. April is no different, there’s lots of poker to be enjoyed (or not enjoyed, depending on your personal reaction to beat after beat at the tables) with festivals at the Venetian, the Wynn and for ladies only, the South Point, where the ladies International Poker Series (LIPS) takes place. There is also the PGT US Poker Open at PokerGo’s Studios at the Aria for the high rollers out there.

The Wynn’s Signature Poker Series is a low stakes affair featuring a $600 buy-in main event, which is sure to be busy. The Wynn/Encore is a magnificent place to play poker, whether it is being held on the casino floor near the poker room, or in the extensive conference suites in the adjacent business centre.

There is of course lots of poker taking place all over Las Vegas, its not just confined to big poker series. Resorts World and the Orleans are two of the casinos that have great daily tournament offerings and staff who really care about customer satisfaction. Look out for PokerWired’s Las Vegas Poker Room Guide, coming soon to a website near you (this one actually).

Rest of the USA

Outside Las Vegas there is also plenty going on in April. In fact there are far too many poker festivals and series going on for us to be able to list them all in an article like this, so we’re not even going to attempt to. But we’ve picked out the biggest and best of these, and some of the rest, as highlights of the month.

The World Poker Tour is now in full flow, with Championships in Choctaw, Oklahoma and Hollywood, Florida, for the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown. In addition to these land based WPT events, the WPT Voyage set sail on March 31st from Miami and returns to port on April 6th with a new champion on board. Also in Florida, the Moneymaker Tour visits Daytona Beach.

There are two WSOPC events in April, in Elgin, Illinois, north of Chicago and in Tunica, Mississippi.

The RUNGOOD Poker Series visits Quapaw Oklahoma and for residents of Round Rock, Texas, Doug Polk’s The Lodge has its Championship going on. The Poker Go Tour makes a rare stop outside Las Vegas, also in Texas, but the buy-ins are not as high as the studio tournaments, with a $3,500 buy-in main event.

Australia

Crown Casino Melbourne, who were the operators of the Aussie Millions, have not run a live poker festival since October 2020 and had publicly stated that the vast country’s most historic and iconic poker tournament was being shelved indefinitely. This was sad news to both Australian and traveling poker players, as the Aussie Millions had been one of the highlights of the international poker circuit, with players from all over the world flocking to Melbourne to enjoy the poker and also the tennis, as it was timed to coincide with the Australian Open each year.

For the last few months however there has been a rumour that the event might return and that rumour looks a lot stronger now that Crown Casino has indeed scheduled its first live poker festival in nearly four years. The event they are staging this month is the the Crown Poker Series, which runs from the 2-7 April and has a A$1,500 main event taking place at the end of the festival, over the weekend of 6-7 April.

Not only that, WPT Gold Coast runs later in the month, with its A$2,000 main event being held from 19-23 April.
