Reigning WSOP Player of the Year Shaun Deeb enters the 2026 series targeting a historic consecutive title. Armed with an early points lead from WSOP Europe, Deeb also chases his ninth career bracelet during his first year of Hall of Fame eligibility.
The 2026 World Series of Poker (WSOP) presents a distinct opportunity for Shaun Deeb to etch his name into the history books in two unique ways.
Speaking with PokerNews during a break on Day 2 of Event #2: $5,000 8-Handed No-Limit Hold'em, the reigning WSOP Player of the Year (POY) expressed strong confidence regarding his chances for the upcoming summer.
Deeb is aiming to become the first poker player to win the prestigious POY title in consecutive years, as well as the first to secure the honor three times overall.
Although Deeb built a substantial chip stack early on Day 2 of Event #2 before ultimately busting short of the money, his campaign for the 2026 title is already well underway.
Thanks to a recent structural adjustment to the POY format, the leaderboard now factors in results from the WSOP Europe series held in April and the upcoming WSOP Paradise scheduled for December.
Deeb capitalized heavily during the European leg in April, racking up two runner-up finishes alongside a ninth-place score. Because contenders can only use their top 15 point scores toward the final POY standings, these early results give him a distinct advantage over the rest of the field.
"I have basically the equivalent of a bracelet lead on the field," Deeb stated. "So, I definitely fill out my scores, make five or six final tables this summer, get a win, and then, you know, I'm a huge favorite going to the Bahamas."
Securing back-to-back titles carries immense personal significance for Deeb, who dedicates a massive amount of effort toward the leaderboard race each season. He noted that he has planned to pursue the Player of the Year title aggressively for the last 10 years.
Reflecting on the mathematical reality and history of the achievement, Deeb added that he remains bitter about missing out on the title in 2019, making a consecutive win in 2026 even more meaningful. According to Deeb, pulling off back-to-back honors is something that will probably never be replicated in the poker world.
The summer of 2026 is critical for Deeb beyond the leaderboard points. Having recently turned 40, he is entering his first year of eligibility for the Poker Hall of Fame.
Winning his ninth career WSOP bracelet this summer would significantly bolster his chances of being voted in, while simultaneously making him just the seventh player in poker history to reach the nine-bracelet milestone.
His high status among his peers was further cemented in the 25k Fantasy Draft, where he went for the highest bid of $133.
While Deeb holds a commanding headstart, he anticipates a fierce challenge from a close friend. When asked who would provide his toughest competition, Deeb pointed directly to "Texas Mike."
According to Deeb, Texas Mike is one of only two people who will fire more bullets and register for more actual events than he will.
Deeb labeled his friend a "sicko" who will multi-table aggressively and eventually play every single event featured on the WSOP schedule, making him a major threat to
Deeb's historic ambitions.
