Online Poker Highlights for Weekend of 23-24 March, 2024

Almost every weekend is a busy one in the world of online poker and this one is no exception, with major series taking place at several sites, a rake free mtt promotion and the Sunday Majors. We mark your card for the key events of the weekend and tell you where the biggest overlays are likely to occur in PokerWired’s weekly preview of the weekend’s online poker highlights.

Running until the end of March, the WSOP Super Circuit on GG Poker will soon enter its final week, with 12 of the 18 gold ring events now completed. There have been no ring events in any danger of overlaying, as is expected for one of the most prestigious online tournament series, on the world biggest site. All of the ring events completed so far have comfortably exceeded their guarantees. 

While millions of dollars of prize money have already been awarded, the biggest event of the series is yet to come. There are no ring events that start and conclude this weekend, however there are three phase ring events that all have multiple starting days running over the weekend, including the $525 Main Event. Next week there are a further three ring events in addition to the final stages of the remaining phase tournaments.

The single biggest winner of the week was FoldFactory007, who may have been both a little shaken and stirred when he scooped the $1m Mega Jackpot bounty during the $25 GG Bounty Hunter tournament this week.

There is a promotion running throughout March on WPT Global whereby all mtt rake is being returned to players via three six-figure freerolls. These have $600,000 in prizepool guarantees and players must participate in a minimum number of tournaments during the month to get an invite to participate. WPT Global has been notorious for overlays and this promotion seems to be working in that respect, as there has been a significant lift in participation in key tournaments which has steadily increased as the month has progressed. Some tournaments that were almost always overlaying are now performing much better.

However, there are three tournaments per day (and six on Sundays) which are designed to almost always overlay. These are the ‘Bump it Up’ tournaments, which are subject to an obligatory 10% guarantee increase if they ever hit their guarantee. Last week was one of those weeks when all the guarantees were met in the Sunday Slams and while that may not have provided any overlay value for those who played them, its going to be far more likely that they return to form and overlay again this weekend, with increased targets to hit.

Some tournaments on WPT Global are still struggling, such as satellites to live WPT events, which continue to offer great value to anyone trying to lock up a seat at a WPT event. Tuesday’s $110 satellite to WPT Korea had five main event seats guaranteed (total guarantee of $10,520) yet only 62 players entered, producing an overlay of $4,320. 

The $22 Daily Escalator is the worst performing Bump It Up event, getting nowhere near its guarantees on some days of the week. Thursday’s edition mustered only 222 entries, when it needed 303 to meet the $6,050 guarantee, producing an overlay of $1,880. Sundays are usually busier, but with all three Sunday Slams carrying increased guarantees this week, these are the most overlay prone tournaments taking place on WPT Global on Sunday.

Coinpoker’s CSOP (Crypto Series of Poker) Mini starts on Friday 22nd March, and runs daily until March 31st. It is essentially a low roller series of poker, with 42 tournaments on its schedule, including No Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha, with buy-ins ranging from ₮1 to ₮100.
