GTO Wizard AI has set a new poker benchmark, defeating top LLMs like GPT-5.3 and Grok 4. Using deep reinforcement learning and AIVAT technology, the specialized solver achieved a 19.4 bb/100 win rate, far surpassing elite human performance.

The landscape of professional poker has shifted. While general-purpose Large Language Models (LLMs) continue to transform the tech world, a specialized powerhouse has claimed the throne in the world of high-stakes strategy. 

GTO Wizard AI has officially outperformed the most advanced models from OpenAI, Google, and xAI, establishing a new gold standard for strategic reasoning.

The quest to build a perfect poker AI has reached a fever pitch. In 2019, the model Pluribus made history by defeating a group of world-class human professionals. By 2025, the competition moved toward model-on-model warfare. 

While Meta’s LLAMA 4 struggled to maintain its bankroll, OpenAI o3 previously emerged as a dominant force. However, the 2026 leaderboard shows a clear winner: GTO Wizard AI.

Defining GTO Wizard AI

Unlike a general chatbot, GTO Wizard AI is a bespoke poker agent. Originally developed as Ruse AI by Canadian experts Marc-Antoine Provost and Philippe Beardsell, the tech was acquired by GTO Wizard in 2023.

While older bots like Slumbot (the 2018 ACPC champion) relied on pre-computed static strategies, GTO Wizard AI utilizes deep reinforcement learning. It does not store answers; it solves them. 

By training on hundreds of millions of hands, it learned to calculate the highest expected value for any given scenario in real-time.

A Drastic Margin of Victory

In a controlled 150,000-hand match against Slumbot, GTO Wizard AI posted a staggering win rate of 19.4 bb/100. To put that in perspective:
  • World-Class Humans: Typically aim for 5 bb/100.
  • Monetary Impact: At $50/$100 stakes, this AI would generate an hourly win rate of $3,880.

The latest data compares "frontier" LLMs against this specialized agent. The results highlight the gap between general reasoning and specific strategic mastery.

Cutting Through Variance with AIVAT

To ensure these rankings reflect true skill rather than a "run of hot cards," researchers utilized AIVAT technology. 

This variance-reduction tool allows for statistically significant results with 10x fewer hands than traditional testing. It provides a "luck-adjusted" look at performance, proving that GTO Wizard AI is simply playing a better game.

The Open Challenge: API Access

GTO Wizard is now inviting developers and researchers to test their own models via a new API access portal. This move promotes transparency in the AI space, allowing third-party agents to compete in real-time evaluations.

The Challenge Rules:
  • Format: Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em.
  • Stacks: 200bb (resetting every hand).
  • Volume: Minimum 2,500 hands; cap of 100,000 hands per month.

With Heads-Up Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) benchmarks on the horizon, the era of unverified claims is over. The leaderboard is the only proof that matters.
