WPT Global is facing significant blowback after naming Ren Jiang “Tony” Lin as a new ambassador, just over a year after Lin’s involvement in a high-profile real-time assistance (RTA) coaching scandal. The appointment triggered immediate responses from poker’s integrity watchdogs, culminating in the resignation of Chip Race podcast co-hosts David Lappin and Dara O’Kearney.

The decision to bring Lin on board wasn’t subtle and neither was the fallout.

Why Lin’s Signing Raised Eyebrows

Tony Lin’s name surfaced in a 2025 RTA controversy after a PokerNews investigation detailed a case involving alleged strategic advice during a final table. Screenshots and chat logs appeared to show Lin acknowledging the assistance and apologizing for what he described as “instinctive” advice offered during an ongoing game.

According to follow-up reporting, Lin was disqualified from a WSOP Super Circuit Main Event in Cyprus and faced disciplinary action across multiple platforms. He later issued a public apology and restitution was made, but the integrity concerns lingered.

WPT Global’s Rationale and Messaging

Rather than ignoring the history, WPT Global leaned into it. In their public announcement, the operator directly referenced Lin’s prior suspension and the associated sanctions. They described the move as a fresh start and framed Lin’s signing as part of a narrative around performance, redemption, and learning from mistakes.

“Proven performance and results,” the blog post read, were the key criteria and Lin, apparently, met them.

Chip Race Walks

For long-time WPT Global partners David Lappin and Dara O’Kearney, the signing was incompatible with their stance on the RTA issue. Within 24 hours, they announced their departure from the brand, stating that Lin’s appointment made their continued ambassador roles “untenable.”

The Chip Race podcast, which had been operating under WPT Global’s banner, will continue independently.

WPT (The Live Tour) Distances Itself

PokerNews also reported that the WPT brand itself, distinct from WPT Global, briefly issued a statement clarifying that it does not endorse WPT Global’s ambassador choices. The post was later deleted, but the message was clear: WPT Global acts independently, and not everyone inside the wider WPT ecosystem was aligned.

Integrity, Image, and the Second-Chance Debate

The heart of the story is the debate poker keeps having and never quite resolving.

What qualifies as “served time” in an RTA case? When does a player deserve reintegration? And should the industry treat sponsorship deals as rewards, or as tools for rehabilitation?

WPT Global’s stance is straightforward: Lin has paid his dues. But to critics, placing a controversial figure into a public ambassador role reopens old wounds and sets a concerning precedent.

The New Normal?

Lin’s signing stands. Lappin and O’Kearney are out. And poker’s ecosystem now has a fresh, high-profile case study in how reputation, redemption, and real-time assistance intersect.

Expect more brands, players, and communities to draw their own lines, whether in support, opposition, or self-preservation.
