Leon Sturm Leads $100K NLH Main Event After Day 1

Day 1 of the prestigious $100,000 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event is officially complete. The opening day of the tournament attracted 142 entrants, including re-entries. Following 10 levels of play, nearly half of the field was eliminated, leaving 73 players to bag and tag their chips for the next stage.

Germany's Leon Sturm secured the overnight chip lead. Sturm idled along for a significant portion of Day 1 before building momentum. He won a notable pot after turning a straight with king-ten of spades against fellow German Tobias Schwecht, successfully getting a river raise paid off.

Sturm then eliminated Wiktor Malinowski, winning a coinflip with ace-jack against the Polish player's pocket fives. Late in the session, Sturm claimed the remainder of Schwecht's stack. Sturm flopped a set with pocket threes against Schwecht's pocket aces and allowed his opponent to empty the clip into him.
The hand propelled Sturm to the top of the leaderboard.

He returns to action at 1:00 p.m. local time on May 22 with 1,370,000 chips, equivalent to 137 big blinds. Danilo Velasevic sits in second place with 1,031,000 chips, while Javid Ismayilov rounds off the top three with 1,016,000 chips. The remaining field features numerous prominent players, including:
  • Ben Tollerene (988,000)
  • Alex Foxen (819,000)
  • Jesse Lonis (771,000)
  • Isaac Haxton (754,000)
  • Fedor Holz (647,000)
  • Adrian Mateos (545,000)
  • Mikita Badziakouski (413,000)
  • Paul Phua (201,000)

Christoph Vogelsang Completes Triton Hat Trick

Germany's Christoph Vogelsang secured his third Triton Poker championship on May 21 after winning the $50,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em 7-Handed event. The 40-year-old outlasted a 118-strong field to earn $1,037,858, marking the 13th seven-figure score of his career.

The final payouts were adjusted due to a deal struck during three-handed play between Vogelsang, Leonard Maue, and Thomas Muehloecker. Under the terms of the agreement, Maue banked $909,127, while Muehloecker took home $1,071,015.
