Notable WSOP Main Event Champions

Phil Hellmuth (1989)

At age 24, Phil Hellmuth became the youngest WSOP Main Event winner at the time by defeating reigning champion Johnny Chan. Beyond his Main Event victory, Hellmuth has amassed a record-setting 17 WSOP bracelets, making him one of the most decorated players in tournament history.

Johnny Chan (1987, 1988)

Johnny Chan remains one of the most respected players in poker, having won back-to-back Main Events in 1987 and 1988. His near win in 1989, thwarted by Hellmuth, was dramatized in the poker classic Rounders, cementing his influence on poker culture.

Stu Ungar (1980, 1981, 1997)

Nicknamed “The Kid,” Stu Ungar's dominance in the early 1980s and his emotional 1997 comeback win are legendary. He remains the only player to win the WSOP Main Event three times, and his life story is seen as both a tale of brilliance and caution.

Huck Seed (1996)

Huck Seed's 1996 Main Event victory added to his reputation as a thoughtful and analytical player. With four WSOP bracelets and a strong presence at the tables for decades, he represents poker's era of transition from old-school legends to modern pros.

Daniel Weinman (2023)

Weinman captured the 2023 title and a record $12.1 million first prize, prevailing over a record-setting field of 10,043 entrants—the second-largest in WSOP history. 

The American pro also surpassed Jamie Gold’s record of scooping 12 million in prize money which was the highest pay cheque claimed by a WSOP Main Event at that time. 

Known for his background in engineering and mathematics, Weinman’s victory represents the rise of a modern and data-savvy player.
