WPT Tokyo 2026 Cancelled Over Regulatory Concerns

According to JEPA, discussions were held with administrative authorities, lawyers, specialists and other relevant parties before the decision was made.

The conclusion was that organisers could not guarantee an environment in which players could participate without regulatory risk. Rather than stage one of Japan's biggest poker festivals while that uncertainty remained, WPT Tokyo 2026 was cancelled.
What does this mean for livepoker in Japan and will WPT be able to run this event at a later stage is still unknown, but it is clear that the livepoker scene in Japan is suffering.

There is an important distinction in the announcement.

WPT Tokyo has not said that Japanese authorities issued an order prohibiting the tournament. Instead, the cancellation was a preventative decision taken by JEPA after consultations with authorities and legal advisers.

That makes the story considerably more significant than a routine calendar change.

Japan has developed one of Asia's most active domestic poker scenes, but tournament operators work within an unusual legal framework.

Conventional poker tournaments cannot simply award cash prizes in the same way as operators in many other jurisdictions.

Major Japanese tournament organisers have instead developed structures where successful players can receive tournament entries, travel support and other benefits rather than conventional cash payouts.

That model has allowed tournament poker to grow rapidly in Japan, with WPT Tokyo becoming part of an increasingly busy domestic live poker calendar.

The latest regulatory uncertainty, however, raises questions about how sustainable some of those tournament structures will be going forward.

Players who have already qualified for WPT Tokyo will not simply lose their tickets.

JEPA says eligible WPT Tokyo tickets issued in Japan can instead be exchanged for vouchers for WPT Seoul.

WPT Seoul is scheduled to take place from October 30 to November 9 at INSPIRE Entertainment Resort in South Korea.

The solution provides affected players with another opportunity to play a WPT festival, but it does little to answer the bigger question surrounding the future of major poker tournaments inside Japan.

A World Poker Tour festival disappearing from the calendar is unusual, but WPT Tokyo is not without precedent.

Several WPT events have been cancelled or postponed during the past few years, particularly in Asia.

A much closer comparison with the situation in Tokyo came 2 years earlier.

WPT Vietnam Passport to the World Championship had been scheduled to begin at Crown Poker Club in Hanoi on May 14, 2024.

The festival was substantial.

It was expected to feature 63 trophy events, more than $2 million in guarantees and ten packages to the WPT World Championship in Las Vegas.

Instead, the entire festival was cancelled essentially on the eve of the opening day.

Reports from Vietnam indicated that authorities had investigated whether all necessary approvals for the event had been obtained.

Crown Poker Club publicly attributed the cancellation to technical reasons, while subsequent industry reporting said local officials had determined that not all required approvals were in place.

The cancellation came during a turbulent period for live poker in Vietnam, with several other international poker festivals also cancelled or interrupted amid increased regulatory scrutiny.

Of WPT's recent cancellations, Vietnam 2024 is therefore probably the clearest comparison with what is now happening in Japan.
